Norse Mythology Sleep Story · The Giant's Bride · 3 Hour Bedtime Story for Adults

Norse Mythology Sleep Story for Adults. A 3 hour bedtime story with calm narration and an ambient soundscape designed to be listened to as you fall asleep. Tonight we tell the story the old north called the Þrymskviða. Of a god who woke before the others and reached for the thing that was always beside him. Of an empty pillow. Of an empty hand. Of a hammer that was not there. This is the story of the borrowed wings. Of Loki in Freyja's falcon cloak, flying east across the cold country to Jǫtunheimr. Of Þrymr the giant king seated on the high mound of his hall, who admitted at once that he had taken the hammer, and who set a price for its return. Of the council in Ásgarðr where the price was spoken aloud, and Freyja refused, and the Brísingamen leapt loose at her throat from the force of her refusal. Of Heimdallr, who saw what no one else would say, and who proposed the only road forward. Of the gods dressing Thor in fine wheat-coloured linen and a bridal veil. Of Loki, who agreed to come as the handmaid. This is the story of the wedding feast in the cold hall of the giants. Of a bride who ate an entire ox and drank three barrels of mead, and a quick-tongued maid who explained each strange thing the bride did. Of a giant king who lifted the veil to kiss his bride, and saw two eyes burning at the bottom of the linen like coals at the bottom of a forge. Of Loki, who had an answer for that too. Of the hammer brought out at last to bless the marriage, laid in the bride's lap as the old custom required. Of the hand that closed around the haft. This is the moment that turns. The veil falls away. The hall fills with what the giants had forgotten the gods could do. And then the long quiet chariot ride home through the morning, the hammer back where it belonged. The story ends as our stories end, with the wolf at the edge of time still waiting, and with the Hávamál's quiet promise that a hall of one's own is worth keeping. Sleep well. Source: the Þrymskviða from the Poetic Edda (Codex Regius, 13th century Iceland), with chapter framing and Hávamál anchors drawn from the same manuscript tradition.
