Anchor Due to the war, the export route for our used cars heading to the Middle East, our largest market, has been blocked for two months. Exporters are holding out by seeking other markets or selling parts instead of cars. Reporter Choi Seung-hoon reports. Reporter I revisited the used car export complex in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, which I covered immediately after the outbreak of the war in Iran. The parking lot is full as unloaded vehicles pile up. Before the war broke out, these foreign cars sold well in the Middle East, but now only dust is accumulating, to the point where black grime is visible. Containers that had already been loaded onto ships are being unloaded, [Used Car Transporter: It is a situation where we are bringing the vehicles back in. They need to go out, but since they can't, they are piling up.] Truck parts have been loaded into containers that should be carrying cars. [Used Car Transporter: The parts are being shipped out, car parts.] [Since exports aren't happening, we're resorting to this now.] After the route to the Middle East—the largest market accounting for 35% of used car exports—was blocked, export volume plummeted by over 70% in the month immediately following the war. They are attempting to continue exports to the Middle East via alternative routes, but the problem lies in transportation costs. Transportation costs from Incheon to the Port of Khorfakkan in the United Arab Emirates have risen from around $1,500 per container before the war to around $6,000, and when local additional costs are added, the figure approaches $10,000. Since one container carries three cars, the transportation cost is equivalent to the price of the cars themselves. Considering the increased freight rates, it would be reasonable to charge higher prices, but market rates have actually fallen.
