Fernando Zóbel. Contrapuntos

Artist Fernando Zóbel would have been 96 years old today. To pay tribute to this key proponent of Philippine modern art in the 1950s, let us take you back to 2017 when the Ayala Museum proudly presented the exhibition Fernando Zóbel. Contrapuntos in the 57th edition of the Venice Biennale, selected as one of the Collateral Events. This video simulates what you see as you walk through the space, as well as a preview of the exhibition catalogue. Focusing on the years 1957-1962, the exhibition highlights the unique synthesis and harmony of Asian and Western painting techniques as seen in his signature Saetas and Serie Negra paintings. His canvases were juxtaposed with the sculptures of his Spanish contemporary, Pablo Serrano (1908-1985). Karim Raslan, writing for the South China Morning Post, said Zóbel. Contrapuntos was “exquisitely curated, [capturing] the essence of this binational figure with his joint Spanish/Filipino roots as it explored his ‘controlled elaboration’ of aesthetics.” The exhibition is co-curated by Ditas Samson, senior curator, Ayala Museum and Guillermo Paneque, Spanish visual artist, and was made possible with the support of all the people and institutions listed in the credits of this video.
