SLINKY WIZARD Retro Set by Gus Till (10.03.2016)
As with many projects of that era, the story of Slinky Wizard begins in the parties in Goa of the early 90s. Dominic Lamb started DJing at acid house clubs in London in 1988. Two years later, while travelling in India, he met Adam Boyd in Goa, where they connected through the emerging techno-trance sound being played on the beaches. Lamb continued DJing in Goa and internationally before returning to the UK in 1992, when he and Boyd produced their first track, “The Rising,” together. Soon joined by George Barker and Ronnie Biggs both involved in organizing Goa-style parties in the UK the band recorded "The Wizard EP" in February 1994 at Butterfly Studios with the assistance of Simon Posford (Hallucinogen). The EP became the first release on Flying Rhino Records later that year. Tragically, Adam Boyd passed away in an accident in the summer of 1994. Over the following 18 months, Slinky Wizard continued as a fluid project, collaborating with various producers. Among them was Matt Evans (Technossomy), contributing to tracks like "Shivari Thing" and "The Wandering Prophet". In 1996, the band worked with Gus Till of Butterfly Studios. Having previously worked with acts such as INXS and contributed to film soundtracks, Gus Till quickly became a central figure in Slinky Wizard’s evolving sound. Tracks like "Funkus Munkus" appeared on Flying Rhino’s "First Flight compilation, while "License To Slink", a psychedelic trance reinterpretation of the James Bond theme, was featured on the label's "Air Born" compilation. By 1997, their contributions to the "Black Rhino" and "White Rhino" compilations marked a clear shift in direction: from the standard ‘Goa'-style riffs and melodies of earlier work toward a more stripped-down, abstract approach, heard in tracks like "Sacred Fist" and "People Like Us". In 1998, the project released "The Monkey Comes Cheap" EP and began plans for a full-length album. Alongside the studio work, Dominic Lamb continued DJing at trance events and festivals across the UK, Europe, Asia, North America, and Australasia. Through the years, Slinky Wizard was variously joined by Simon Posford, James Monro, Dick Trevor, Matt Evans, and Jules Evans. Since 2001, Slinky Wizard has had no further output.
