With its vibrant Lagoon of Seven Colors, peaceful atmosphere, and eco-conscious attractions, this town in Quintana Roo offers something truly different from the nearby tourist hubs like Tulum or Playa del Carmen. In this video, we take you through everything we did during two days in Bacalar — from floating down natural rapids to spotting ancient stromatolites and discovering some excellent street food. One of our first stops was the Bacalar Ecoparque, a peaceful boardwalk through mangroves with direct access to the famous lagoon. For just 20 pesos, it’s one of the most affordable ways to experience Bacalar’s beauty. We also joined a boat tour across the Laguna Bacalar, which included stops at notable points like the Pirate Channel (Canal de los Piratas) and several lesser-known areas. Even in rainy weather, the color changes in the water were visible and stunning. These tours often include an option to kayak, though that depends on the weather and your timing. One of the most unique features of Bacalar is its freshwater stromatolites, ancient living formations that look like rocks but are actually alive. These formations are believed to be over 3.5 billion years old and are essential to the lagoon’s ecosystem. They can be seen at places like Los Rapidos, a narrow channel of fast-moving water where you can float down without needing to swim. Los Rapidos also offers access to some of the stromatolites up close, but care is needed to avoid damaging them. Life jackets are included in the entrance fee, and lockers are available. There's a restaurant on-site, though we opted for Los de Atlixco in town instead — a street food spot that turned out to be one of our best meals in Mexico. For those interested in history, Fuerte de San Felipe is worth a visit. This 18th-century fort was built to defend the town from pirates and now includes a small museum about Bacalar’s past. Getting around Bacalar is easy for the most part, especially in the town center. But for spots like Los Rapidos or Casa China (a boat tour departure point), it’s best to pre-book a taxi through your hotel or WhatsApp. Everything we covered is in this video — from where we stayed to how we got around — giving you a full picture of what Bacalar has to offer.
