In April 2010, a federal inspector walked into a henhouse in Galt, Iowa, and found flies, maggots, and feed pits overflowing with dead birds. The operation belonged to Jack DeCoster, a man the FDA had repeatedly cited and fined for substandard conditions going back to the 1990s. Within months of that inspection, 550 million eggs were pulled from American store shelves in the largest egg recall in United States history. Over 1,900 confirmed Salmonella Enteritidis cases.
