Vera Rubin: The Scientist and the Observeratory (Episode 237)

Today with Shen Ge and Leonard Kramer, we will cover Vera Rubin -- the scientist and the observatory. Vera Rubin (1928–2016) was a pioneering American astronomer who provided the first observational evidence for the existence of dark matter. By studying how stars rotate around the centers of spiral galaxies, she proved the universe must contain massive amounts of unseen, invisible matter holding galaxies together. Also, the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory, located in the Chilean Andes, is a revolutionary astronomical facility designed to conduct the 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). Featuring the world’s largest digital camera, it will repeatedly scan the southern sky to create an ultra-high-definition, time-lapse movie of the universe. 🎙️ New to streaming or looking to level up?
