The Legend of Kottiyoor Temple According to Hindu scriptures, King Daksha Prajapati organized a grand yajna (sacrificial ritual) but deliberately did not invite his son-in-law, Lord Shiva. Daksha’s daughter Sati attended the yajna despite not being invited and was insulted by her father for marrying Shiva. Unable to bear the humiliation of her husband, Sati immolated herself in the sacrificial fire. When Shiva learned of Sati’s death, he became furious and created Veerabhadra, who destroyed the yajna and beheaded Daksha. It is believed that the place where this sacred event occurred is Kottiyoor. The temple and its annual rituals symbolically recreate the events of Daksha Yaga. Unlike many temples, the main shrine at Akkare Kottiyoor is a simple stone platform under nature’s canopy, representing the ancient sacrificial altar. Unique Feature • The temple is situated amidst dense forests and beside the Bavali River. • The main Akkare Kottiyoor shrine is open only during the annual Kottiyoor Vaisakha Mahotsavam, usually held during May–June. • Devotees cross the river to reach the sacred shrine, making the pilgrimage a unique spiritual experience. 1. Ikkare Kottiyoor Temple • “Ikkare” means this side of the river. • It is the permanent temple structure where worship takes place throughout the year. • The main deity is Lord Shiva. • Pilgrims usually visit this temple first. • It remains open year-round. 2.
