A mãe da rainha que virou lenda: Vitória de Kent #biografia #historia #monarquia
Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld was born on 17 August 1786 in Coburg, Holy Roman Empire, present-day Germany. She was a German princess from the house of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, and her life would take a decisive turn when she married Edward, Duke of Kent and son of King George III of the United Kingdom. The marriage between Victoria and Edward took place in 1818, amid the urgent need of the British royal family to secure legitimate heirs to the throne. Her husband, however, died less than a year after the birth of the couple's only daughter, the future Queen Victoria, in 1819. From then on, the Duchess of Kent became a widow and solely responsible for the education of her daughter, who was in the direct line of succession to the British throne. Determined and ambitious, Victoria raised her daughter under a rigid system of rules known as “the Kensington system”. This method of upbringing was imposed with the help of her confidant and secretary, Sir John Conroy, who many believe exerted a strong influence over the Duchess in order to control the future Queen. The relationship between mother and daughter was complicated. The young Victoria grew up isolated, watched over and deprived of freedom, which caused deep resentment. Despite this, it is undeniable that the Duchess played a central role in shaping the character of the future monarch, shaping her discipline, sense of duty and political vision. After her daughter's accession to the throne in 1837, Victoria of Kent saw her influence at court diminish. Queen Victoria broke with her mother and Conroy, distancing herself from the oppressive tutelage she had suffered. Over time, however, mother and daughter partially reconciled, especially after the Queen's marriage to Prince Albert, which encouraged a rapprochement. The Duchess of Kent lived her last years with less public prominence, but she still received titles and benefits from the Crown. She died on 16 March 1861, aged 74. Her death deeply affected Queen Victoria, who began to reflect more fondly on her mother’s sacrifices and intentions. Victoria of Kent left a quiet but essential legacy. Without her, the monumental figure of Queen Victoria might never have emerged with the same force. Her life was marked by love, grief, ambition and an unwavering desire to protect her daughter’s royal destiny.
