Hostage-taking at the Aachen Regional Central Bank (LZB): 25 years ago, on December 20, 1999, Adnan Hodzic robbed the headquarters of an armored car transport company in Würselen. There, he took three hostages and drove them to the Regional Central Bank in Aachen. Hodzic was armed with hand grenades and pistols and apparently prepared to do anything. The police were determined to prevent the hostage-taker from leaving the bank at all costs and sealed off the LZB. The hostages spent more than 50 hours in fear for their lives. The police then pretended to comply with the hostage-taker's demands to be allowed to leave the Regional Central Bank with money and a hostage, and Adnan Hodzic left the LZB with the hostage Rudolf Becker. The police hoped to persuade him to surrender. When it became clear that this would not work, the final rescue shot was fired. Adnan Hodzic, who at that moment had a hand grenade aimed at the heart of hostage Rudolf Becker, died instantly. All three hostages survived, two were injured by shrapnel and gunshots. After the hostage-taker's death, Rudolf Becker continued to worry until the hand grenade over his heart could be defused.
