The Singing Stone-Richard Pearson Thomas
Sung by vocalist Staff Sergeant Michelle Doolittle, The Singing Stone by Richard Pearson Thomas narrates the story of Sacajawea's life and struggles as a sixteen-year old Lemhi Shoshone woman. Sacajawea's bravery and perseverance played an enormous role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition across the newly acquired western portion of the country after the Louisiana Purchase. Her knowledge of multiple languages and dialects, ecology, and geography proved invaluable to the mission. Sacajawea and her infant son on her back served as a symbol of peace, easing tensions when negotiating with other Native American chiefs. Her story is an example of the human ability to withstand great tragedy and overcome adversity even in the most difficult situations.
