In the human-canine world, there are millions of extraordinary relationships based on mutual respect and trust, but unfortunately, there are also many others (if you can call them that) that are based on actual abuse. When the word "abuse" is used, the most physical, cruel, or coercive forms immediately come to mind. By now I'm sure you already know what I think of these people, and honestly, I'd rather not even say a word about them because it's so disgusting. However, there are also other types of abuse, "invisible abuse." These are subtle and different, and aren't intended to harm the dog in any way. In fact, they're dictated by the love one feels for a dog—perhaps a morbid and exaggerated love that, like all morbid and exaggerated loves, doesn't actually lead to good things. So let's look at five specific types of abuse that are perpetrated with the aim of benefiting the dog, but are actually behaviors I recommend you avoid.
