“Todo preso político está preso por un fin político, no de justicia”: director de la ONG Foro Penal

Amid the tragedy of the earthquakes in Venezuela, political prisoners are also victims of this painful situation, having lost loved ones to whom they haven't even had the opportunity to say a final goodbye; others continue to be victims of repression. Given this situation, and considering the upcoming dialogue between Chavismo and the opposition, the families of political prisoners have requested their release from the interim government of Delcy Rodríguez. To discuss this issue, Alfredo Romero, director of the NGO Foro Penal and a human rights lawyer, spoke with the program La Tarde on NTN24. According to Romero, since July 2nd, only six prisoners have been released, and “at least 368 political prisoners remain incarcerated.” Regarding the regime's stance on the various cases of political prisoners, he stated: “There is no reconciliation, no political act, not even amnesty or forgiveness.” What's happening is simply complying with the law and releasing those people against whom there is no evidence. Those with alleged evidence, or some indication linking them to a political act that makes them political prisoners, are the ones who remain incarcerated.
