What does it mean: DENY yourself, TAKE UP your CROSS and Follow Jesus (Not what you think it is)

Most people think they know what it means to deny yourself, pick up your cross and follow Jesus. But if we understand that under what circumstances Jesus said this, we can understand what does it mean to deny our self, pick up the cross and follow Him. In fact, Jesus said to Peter when he denied the will of God: "I must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day". This is when Jesus told everyone: "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and pick up his cross, and follow Me. - Matthew 16:24 But what did Jesus mean? and how can you pickup the cross and follow Him daily?
