El gnomo "Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer"

"The Gnome" is an Aragonese legend by the Spanish writer Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, published on January 12, 1863, in the newspaper La América. In a village at the foot of Mount Moncayo, in the portico of a church, Uncle Gregorio warns the girls returning from fetching water about the dangers of lingering at the spring after nightfall. He tells them that in the mountain's depths live diabolical spirits who guard hidden treasures and seduce the unwary with promises of wealth. Among those who hear the story are Marta and Magdalena, two orphaned sisters with opposite personalities who, without confessing it, love the same man and dream of escaping poverty.
