Lake says that it would be better to get a sample extracting the oil. It is going to be cleaner since we don't have to worry about the impurities on the plug it self as it is on the bottom of the car, specially in cars that drive on dirty surfaces. If you alternate between oil changing methods, make sure the samples are taken from the same method every time. By extracting the oil in stead of draining it, we also avoid the possible "maintenance induced failures" you could cause every time we open the plug to drain the engine.
