Without knowing his life, it's impossible to know what drove him to pick up a video camera at a young age and go on to redefine the world of filmmaking, exploring genres and constantly taking risks. His ability to instinctively transform words and thoughts into successful films allowed him to paint worlds that never existed before. He demonstrated the power of cinema to engage the viewer. He has become an icon of our time, a cultural phenomenon. This is part of his trajectory in the world of cinema, unique and unrepeatable. This is the story of Steven Spielberg. Steven Spielberg was born in 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the eldest of four children. His father, Arnold Spielberg, was an electronics and computer genius sought after by many companies in the industry. Like many American fathers, he worked six days a week and returned home late at night. The family moved constantly depending on where he was hired. They spent most of their years in Phoenix, Arizona. His mother, Leah, was a restorer and talented pianist, an exuberant woman trapped in the American suburbs of the 1950s, a place unable to nurture her artistic inclinations. She wasn't a true mother figure, but more of a friend who got into trouble just like her own children. Steven spent his time watching television and listening to music. School wasn't his forte, he didn't like sports, and, as often happens, he was bullied for being different. He grew up without much self-esteem. A lonely boy, often influenced by negative thoughts. His family is of Jewish origin, and even this doesn't help him, because he grows up in places where he feels different from everyone else, where there's a certain cultural divide, where he's excluded and discriminated against. He wishes he weren't Jewish. But Steven has a passion that makes him feel good and that actually changes his life. Given his passion for silent films shown on television, he tries his hand at making short films. Making home movies, picking up his father's video camera, allows him to escape from reality and express himself at the same time. It becomes a way to make friends and meet new people he might not have met otherwise. He makes films for his scout group, and at 13, the moment comes when he realizes what his future holds. He goes to the cinema to see "Lawrence of Arabia," David Lean's masterpiece that won seven Oscars. He leaves the theater thinking there's no point in continuing to use the video camera, because the level is too high. He returns to the film several times, week after week, until he makes a decision: either he'll become a director or die trying. His mother, Leah, supports his growing interest in film, while Arnold considers it a hobby and encourages Steven to study for a stable career in the future. The initial level of his output is off the charts. Influenced by the war films he watched on TV, he creates short films about World War II, trying to make them as real as possible. To record some scenes, he goes to a military airport, where some planes used in the war were stored. He films and directs his friends. He edits those scenes with real combat footage. He makes a 40-minute film, Escape to Nowhere, with a cast of schoolmates, which wins first prize in a state competition. His incredible talent for creating rudimentary but extremely effective special effects is already evident. His first films as a child already demonstrate Steven's greatest talent: telling stories without using words.
