The Guajataca Black Tunnel, Quebradillas, Puerto Rico. Old Railway Viaduct Stone Tower. Dark Tunnel

#Puerto Rico #adventure #isladelencanto American Railroad Company of Porto Rico - The Quebradillas Dark Tunnel We all know about the famous Guajataca beach tunnel but did you know that there is a much longer tunnel inland in the same valley? At the beginning of the 20th century, the American Railroad Company of Porto Rico took on the task of continuing to expand the works begun by the Compañía de Ferrocarriles de Puerto Rico in 1888 by expanding the railroad tracks that would eventually connect San Juan with Ponce. The traced route would cross the mouth of the Guajataca River. The hydrography and topography of the area dictated the need to build a huge metal viaduct and two tunnels. At some 514 feet long, 16 feet high, and 14 feet wide, the East Tunnel completed in 1906 is the longer of the two tunnels. Both its length and its curved geometry conspire to prevent the other end from being seen from its entrances, creating total darkness at some points along the tunnel. Reason why it is known as the Dark Tunnel or Black Tunnel. The Black Tunnel in Quebradillas: a tunnel that was used for the passage of railways to transport people and cargo. The Black Tunnel Quebradillas, PR Like the Guajataca Tunnel, the Black Tunnel was built at the beginning of the 20th century, around 1904, by the American Railroad Company of Puerto Rico, who began to build the section that would run from Camuy to Aguadilla. In 1906 the construction of this tunnel was completed, which would connect with El Túnel de Guajataca through a steel viaduct that was built above the level of the river. The track of this railroad was not a simple one: this track was on a horseshoe from which one could only exit by passing through El Túnel Negro, and then going up the coast of Quebradillas until reaching the flat area. The Black Tunnel Quebradillas, PR The structure is extremely dark. If you look closely, you will see that the tunnel has the year its construction was completed (1906) written on the top center of the arch. It is the only part of the tunnel that has it, since its other end does not have the year engraved, and neither is it in El Túnel de Guajataca. Going through the Black Tunnel can take around 5 to 10 minutes. Inside, you can see bats, the different textures of the tunnel and a hole in one of the walls in the middle of the tunnel, which served as a shelter for one or two people when the train appeared on the track by surprise. The Black Tunnel Quebradillas, PR Near the tunnel, after a few miles of walking, you can see the Guajataca River: a beautiful body of crystal clear waters that flow near the farm. However, if the pertinent permits are requested from the owner or the guards who patrol the area, you can be on the land where the river is located and enjoy this natural resource. Today the Guajataca Tunnel is a historical monument, receiving thousands of tourists annually. However, El Túnel Negro has been quite the opposite: this structure has been hidden by nature, which has taken care to cover the old tracks and expose only part of what was the structure and the railway path. Over the years, the land for this tunnel was purchased, where in one part of the land the structure and routes of the tunnel are located, and in another part, several acres of land are located for the cultivation of fruits and trees; crops protected by the Department of Natural Resources. The Black Tunnel Quebradillas, PR The road to El Túnel Negro is located on Carr. #2 on the way to Isabela. Once you pass the Mirador de El Guajataca you will see a small space where there are small food carts. That way you reach the tunnel. But we repeat, they are private land so you have to ask for permits. And more importantly, there are restricted areas, for example where the crops are, where access is prohibited.
