The plasma membrane, also called the cell membrane, is the outermost boundary of an animal cell. It is a thin, flexible, and selectively permeable membrane that controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell. Without the plasma membrane, the cell cannot survive. It protects the internal environment of the cell and plays a key role in cell communication, signal transduction, and maintaining homeostasis. 🧬 Key Concepts You Will Learn: The most accepted model of the plasma membrane is the Fluid Mosaic Model, proposed by Singer and Nicolson in 1972. According to this model, the membrane is made up of a phospholipid bilayer in which protein molecules are embedded like a mosaic. The phospholipids have a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail, making the membrane selectively permeable. We will also study the role of cholesterol in maintaining membrane fluidity and the different types of membrane proteins and their specific functions. Understanding transport mechanisms is also a major part of this lecture.
