Sip of Science - Source Control in Sepsis and Septic Shock (Jan J de Waele)

Professor Jan De Waele joined the Sip of Science lecture series with a talk on source control in sepsis and septic shock. In his lecture, he explained why source control is a critical component of sepsis management and why it should be considered in every patient with severe infection. He discussed the main principles of source control, including drainage, debridement, decompression, and definitive repair, while emphasizing that source control extends beyond abdominal infections to multiple clinical scenarios. The lecture also highlighted three key determinants of successful source control: timing, strategy, and adequacy, and explored how early and effective intervention can improve outcomes and support antimicrobial stewardship.
