Bharathi Maddishana in Raga Devamanohari by Rithvik Raja

Bharathi Maddishana in Devamanohari was one of the earliest Dikshitar compositions I learned from @tmkrishnaofficial. I still remember the context: it was for a special concert at the Music Academy for an organisation connected to the Sringeri Peeta. He was preparing to perform this piece and Kalavati Kamalasanayuvati for the first time. Most of my early learning years under him, starting from 2003, classes were alongside another student named Deeptha. As I mentioned in an earlier post, he often taught us whatever new song he was preparing to present in concerts, and he’d let us choose what we wanted to learn. Deeptha chose Bharathi Maddishana first, and I got Kalavati. But I always sat in on everyone else’s classes—like a fly on the wall—and eventually learned this song too. A few months before that, I had just learned Evarikai. After that class, I hesitantly asked why Bharathi Maddishana sounded different. That question led to my first introduction to the idea of different raga paramparas and how distinctive phrases can give each tradition its own identity. I remember that concert vividly—it was also the first time, after I had started learning from my guru, that he performed with Umayalpuram Sivaraman. I was beyond excited to witness his artistry up close. What an unforgettable experience!
