The Infallible Trick: "Calling at the Gate" To find the stressed syllable without making a mistake, teach the class the technique of pretending to call the word at the gate of their house. The syllable that our voice stretches out the longest is the stressed one! P-Poca: "Pipoooooooca!" ➔ The PO is very long. It is the stressed syllable. Ca-Neta: "Caneeeeeeeta!" ➔ The NE is stretched out. It is the stressed syllable. Ja-Caré: "Jacarééééééé!" ➔ The RÉ was the longest. It is the stressed syllable. 💡 Golden Rule: If the word already has a written accent (acute ´ or circumflex ^), you don't even need to call the gate! The accented syllable is automatically the stressed syllable. (Ex: Lápis, xícara, sofá). 🧮 2. Word Classification In Portuguese, we count the position of the strongest syllable always from back to front. Depending on where the stress is, the word gets a special name: 🚀 Oxytones: The stressed syllable is the last one. Examples: Ca-ju, pa-pel, sa-ci, vo-vó. ⚖️ Paroxytones: The stressed syllable is the penultimate one (the one next to the last one). This is the group with the most words in our language! Examples: Ca-dei-ra (chair), es-co-la (school), la-pis (pencil), me-ni-no (boy). 👑 Proparoxytone words: The stressed syllable is the antepenultimate one. They are very easy to find because they are all accented. Examples: Mé-di-co (doctor), Ár-vo-re (tree), Pás-sa-ro (bird), Sá-ba-do (Saturday). 🎮 Practical Activities for the Notebook Activity 1: The Detective of the Loud Sound Copy the words in your notebook, separate the syllables, and color or circle the stressed syllable of each one: Shoe ➔ Sa - pa - to Coffee ➔ Ca - fé Magic ➔ Má - gi - co Mug ➔ Ca - ne - ca Vulture ➔ U - ru - bu Activity 2: The Three Columns Game Organize the words below into the correct columns in your notebook (Oxytone, Paroxytone, or Proparoxytone): Words: Pencil case – Popsicle – Lamp – Funnel – Window – Doctor. Correction Key in the Notebook: Column 1 (Oxytone): Popsicle (pi-co-LÉ), Funnel (fu-NIL). Column 2 (Paroxytone words): Estojo (es-TO-jo), Janela (ja-NE-la). Column 3 (Proparoxytone words): Lâmpada ([LÂM]-pa-da), Médico ([MÉ]-di-co). 💡 Pedagogical Tip: The Drum Game Before starting to write, play a clapping or tapping game on the table with the class. Say a word very slowly, syllable by syllable. When you reach the stressed syllable, all students should tap the table very hard (as if it were a drum) and say the other syllables very softly. Example: "Ca (softly) ... DEER (hard tap) ... no (softly)".
