As the third son of a public notary, he evidently came from a wealthy family. As a child and young adult, Amerigo received a careful education from his learned uncle, Giorgio Antonio Vespucci, a Dominican monk at the monastery of San Marco in Florence. The Dominican taught him Latin (he wrote a letter to his father in Latin on October 18, 1478), and also taught him physics, nautical astronomy, and geography.
