Derek Redmond's Epic Inspirational True Story, 1992 Summer Olympics (You Raise Me Up - Josh Groban)

What happened to Derek Anthony Redmond in the 1992 Summer Olympics semi-final 400m race is a touching and inspirational moment, and was one of the unforgettable highlights of the International Olympic Committee's 'Celebrate Humanity' video series. Although he didn't win that race, his determination to finish served as an inspiration to millions. An earlier injury had already forced him to withdraw from the 1988 Seoul Games; he felt determined to conquer the finish line in Barcelona four years later. Redmond aimed for a medal, of whatever color. He had a promising start, qualifying for the semi-finals with the fastest time in his heat. At the start of the semi-final run, he quickly made good speed over the first 250m. It was then that he tore his hamstring; he fell in agony as the other runners sped ahead of him, leaving Redmond on his knees, crippled with pain. What followed has become one of Olympic history's most memorable moments. Redmond rose his feet and tried to finish the race, bravely limping down the track. In an display of brilliant courage amid adversity, Redmond hopped on one leg towards the finish line. Although each step must have been more painful than the last, Redmond refused to give up. The stadium crowd rose to their feet and cheered him on, many with tears. And if that was not enough of an inspiration, what happened next showed to all the power of love and the meaning of perseverance! How that race further unfolded is a vision of how God is with us. When we are hurt and struggling, heavenly Father God comes and helps us finish the race. When we feel crippled, God's Spirit is able to bring us new strength.
