But behind that face was a mind that quietly helped invent the technology inside the phone you are holding right now. This is the true story of Hedy Lamarr (1914–2000) — the Viennese banker's daughter who escaped a controlling first husband with ties to the Nazi arms industry, became a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer star, married six times, raised three children, and in the summer of 1940, at a dining table in Benedict Canyon, sketched out the principle of frequency hopping that would one day make Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS possible. It is also the story of how the world looked away. How the U.S. Navy filed her patent in a drawer. How she lived her final years in a small house in Florida with the curtains drawn.
