A piece of agate from the first century, with the correct geographical origin, the correct age, and a chain of documentation that begins in Rome and crosses the Pyrenees, the medieval kingdoms of Aragon, and the Spanish Civil War. Two popes have held it in their hands. The Vatican granted it a perpetual Jubilee Year. And yet, the Church has never officially declared its authenticity. In this episode of The Forging of Legends, we explore the complete history of the Holy Chalice of Valencia: its possible origin in Palestine in the 1st century, its journey to Rome with the Apostle Peter, the persecution by Emperor Valerian in 258, the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, the centuries it spent hidden in Pyrenean monasteries during the Muslim invasion, and its final arrival in Valencia in 1437 as collateral for a loan that was never repaid. We also explore its rivals: the Chalice of Antioch, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Sacro Catino of Genoa, the green glass bowl that Napoleon seized and returned broken. And we tell the story of Otto Rahn, the German philologist recruited by the SS to search for the Grail in Montségur, who was found dead in the Austrian Tyrol at the age of thirty-five. And the story that almost no one knows: how during the Spanish Civil War the Holy Chalice was secretly removed from the cathedral, hidden among the springs of a sofa in a Valencia apartment, and walled up under a kitchen counter in Carlet, until the war ended. Is it authentic? The honest answer is that no one knows. But it's a piece that could have been there.
