May 25–31: “Jehovah Raised Up a Deliverer” Judges 2–4; 6–8; 13–16 We all know what it is like to commit a sin, feel bad about it, and then repent and resolve to change our ways. But all too often, we forget our earlier resolve, and when temptation comes, we find ourselves committing the same sin. This pattern of behavior appears frequently in the book of Judges. Under the influence of the beliefs and worship practices of the Canaanites, whom the Israelites were commanded to drive out of the land, they broke their covenants with Jehovah and stopped worshiping Him. As a result, they lost His protection and fell into bondage. However, each time this happened, Jehovah gave His covenant people the opportunity to repent and appoint a deliverer—a military leader called a “judge.” Not all the judges in the book of Judges were righteous, but some of them exercised great faith to deliver the children of Israel and restore them to their covenant relationship with the Lord. These accounts remind us that no matter what has separated us from Jesus Christ, He is the Redeemer of Israel and is always ready to deliver us and receive us back as long as we return to Him.
