The UL in the name stands for "Überland Bus," which in turn means "regional bus." The bus doesn't have a lowered floor, meaning steps are required, making it increasingly difficult for people with disabilities to board. This bus was introduced between 1983 and 1984, along with the Setra S 215 SL, Setra SG 219 SL, and Setra SG 221 UL. The SG 221 UL is articulated with its counterpart, the S 215 UL.
