Why dogs react | Stress, trauma, and the canine brain | Daniel Shaw | Forensic Dog Behaviourist
A family brings home a puppy. They pick the wrong breeder, but they love the dog, they raise them well, and then the dog grows up. And because of the shape of their head and the length of their legs, the law decides they are a banned breed. Not for anything they have done. For how they look. That dog can be seized, held for months, and in some cases put to sleep, and there is no legal route to rehome them. This is the world Daniel Shaw works in. He is a dog behaviourist and expert witness with a background in human psychology and neuroscience, and he is often the person a court turns to when a dog's life is on the line. Dogs can walk into those kennels as one animal and come out, months later, as another. Daniel's central point is about a distinction most of us miss. We spend our time asking whether a dog is behaving, and rarely ask whether a dog is well. A dog lunging on the lead, snapping at a visitor, falling apart when you leave: Daniel reads those as a dog telling us something is wrong. The behaviour is the message. Guest: Daniel Shaw, dog behaviourist, educator, and expert witness, with a background in human psychology and neuroscience. He works with aggression and legal cases where a dog's future is at stake.
