The TRUTH About A2L Refrigerants - What Every Technician Must Know!
A2L refrigerants are the next step in the evolution of HVAC technology, driven by environmental regulations and efficiency improvements. To understand how we got here, we first look at the phase-out of R-22, a widely used refrigerant that was phased out due to its high ozone depletion potential. During this transition, R-407C emerged as a popular R-22 drop-in replacement, though it had limitations in performance. Then came R-410A, which became the standard refrigerant in 2010 for new HVAC systems. It offered better efficiency and eliminated ozone depletion concerns, but it has a high global warming potential (GWP). Now, in 2025, the industry is shifting again to A2L refrigerants, which have lower GWP and are more environmentally friendly. Refrigerants are classified based on flammability and toxicity: A1 (like R-410A) – Non-flammable, low toxicity A2L (like R-32, R-454B) – Low flammability, low toxicity, with limited flame propagation A3 (like R-290/propane) – Highly flammable B class refrigerants – Higher toxicity A2Ls have a mild flammability rating but require special handling and training. Their adoption means new safety standards, updated equipment, and changes in installation and servicing practices. This marks one of the biggest shifts in HVAC history, as the industry moves toward more sustainable solutions. check out my other videos HVAC Troubleshooting 101: Mastering Pressure Issues Like A Pro! • HVAC Troubleshooting 101: Mastering Pressu...
