Creative Short Picture Book 1: Jealousy - The Light Beyond the Window Everyone has experienced their heart wavering at least once while looking at the lives of others. When we encounter a friend's grades, someone's popularity, success, talent, or a life that looks enviably happy, an indescribable emotion arises in our hearts. That emotion is called "jealousy." From a young age, we have been taught that jealousy is a bad emotion. Therefore, we feel ashamed even at the moment we feel it and try hard to hide it. However, jealousy is not an emotion felt only by particularly bad people. Rather, it is a very human emotion that naturally arises when we desire to improve ourselves, be recognized more, and be loved more. What matters is not whether one feels jealousy, but how one views and handles that emotion. Jaeseong, the protagonist of "The Light Beyond the Window," is a carpenter who has lived a diligent life for a long time. However, as he watches the success of an old friend, he begins to doubt his own life little by little. The lights of his friend's exhibition were initially an object of envy, but as time passes, they become the spark of jealousy. However, by the end of the story, that light is no longer something to be taken away, but becomes a single lamp illuminating different lives. Jaeseong belatedly realizes that the same scenery can take on a completely different meaning when one's mindset changes. This picture book is not intended to teach you how to get rid of jealousy. Rather, I wanted to convey the courage to look into one's own heart through jealousy. The moment we compare ourselves to others, it is easy to forget our own strengths. However, the moment we stop comparing and choose to learn, jealousy can become a seed of growth. Instead of someone else's light obscuring my own, it can serve as a guide leading me to find my own unique light. I hope that readers of this book will be able to look at their emotions honestly rather than hiding them. Furthermore, I hope parents and teachers will talk with children about "Why did you feel that way?" and "What is that feeling telling us?" rather than scolding them for jealousy. There is no right answer to emotions. However, conversations aimed at understanding emotions always lead us to become slightly more mature people. After closing the last page, I hope you take a moment to reflect on your own heart, just like Jaeseong who gazed at the light beyond the window. The light you are looking at right now may be an object of envy, or it may be a beacon of hope that guides you toward new dreams. Ultimately, that choice depends on our own hearts.
