Elaboración de la seda

Silk is a natural fabric made of protein, obtained from silkworms. These worms are "cultivated" from the time they are eggs, hatching inside mulberry leaves and feeding on them. After metamorphosing into caterpillars, they are able to spin silk cocoons. Once formed, since the chrysalis is still alive, it is "suffocated" with steam or hot air. If necessary, the cocoons are then dried and sorted for sale or spinning. The filaments are wound, and the best ones can yield up to 1,500 meters of silk thread. Traditionally, sericulture has been considered a domestic activity because its care does not require great physical strength, making it possible for children, women, and the elderly to do it.
