Graveyard of Dreams by H. Beam Piper -Vintage science fiction short story sleepstory human voice
This is a well thought out and relatable tale of a young man coming home to his poor, backwater down-in-the-dumps planet system after spending five years at the university on Earth. He sees the dusty, run-down town for the destitute graveyard of dreams that it is and dreads having to tell his family and neighbors exactly what he found out about the thing the whole town pitched in to send him to Earth to find out under the guise of getting an education, something that they hoped would cure all their problems! This is absolutely not an action story in any sense of the word, but the world building is so thorough and vivid and the people are so authenticly portrayed the story is engaging nonetheless. This story takes place in Piper's Terro-Human History setting, no previous knowledge of the setting is needed. This story was later expanded into novel form as «The Cosmic Computer». The original blurb: Despite Mr. Shakespeare, wealth and name are both dross compared with the theft of hope-- and Maxwell had to rob a whole planet of it! Henry Beam Piper (1904-1964) was a prolific author mainly known for his Science Fiction, who had success in his time, but met with difficulties on several levels toward the end, leading to his unfortunate demise by his own hand in 1964. He is celebrated for his two settings where many of his novels took place, «Terro-Human History» a sort of alternative future history and «Paratime» that concerns a timeline-police. He is perhaps most well known for his Hugo-finalist novel «Little Fuzzy». - Stories of Futures Past presents a vintage science fiction short story, narrated by myself, Tom Trussel. An actual, real living human being, warts and all. Any and all voices and effects are produced live during reading with my actual voice. No obnoxious after effects, synthetic voices or filters used.
