Poverty in Papua is a striking irony, considering that this region is rich in natural resources that should be able to boost the welfare of its people. Papua has abundant reserves of gold, copper, natural gas, oil, and biological wealth. However, for many Papuans, this wealth remains a dream that is far from reality. The poverty index in Papua is still the highest in Indonesia. Many areas in Papua still do not have access to decent education, adequate health services, and basic infrastructure such as roads and electricity. Illiteracy rates and school dropout rates are also high, showing how difficult it is for Papuans to get the opportunity to improve their quality of life.
