Alloway Railway Tunnel, Ayrshire, Scotland | Underground Art, Murals & Community Heritage

The Alloway Railway Tunnel in Ayrshire, Scotland, birthplace of Robert Burns, has become one of Scotland’s most colourful community art projects. Once part of the old Maidens & Dunure Light Railway, this forgotten tunnel is now an underground gallery of murals celebrating local people and Scottish heritage. Today it’s awash with colour and life, thanks to a community-driven transformation led by Scottish artist Chris Rutterford, known for his large-scale murals celebrating Scottish identity. The Alloway Tunnel Project has created a rolling comic book that unfolds as you pass through, a celebration of Ayrshire’s people, history, and creativity. It's become one of Ayrshire’s hidden gems, a creative highlight for anyone exploring Scotland’s art, culture and heritage. In this 10-minute film, join us, Tom & Uzma, as we walk through the tunnel’s art-covered walls, meet the people who made it happen, and reveal how a forgotten space became a joyful tribute to Scotland’s community spirit.
