Before Josh. Before Joseph. There was Jimmy Lee Duggar — Jim Bob's father, the patriarch of the family that became America's most famous Christian household. And according to his own granddaughter, children were never safe around him. Amy Duggar King revealed in her 2025 memoir Holy Disruptor that Jimmy Lee's behavior was known inside the family for decades. Amy wasn't allowed to be alone with him as a child. Her grandmother and mother made sure of that. Nobody told Amy the reason — she just knew the rules. It wasn't until after Jimmy Lee's death in 2009 that her mother Deanna finally told her the truth. Amy describes her grandfather as someone who should never have been near children — and says the family knew it the entire time. According to Amy, Jimmy Lee was also violent. He allegedly attacked Deanna severy on multiple occasions. Jim Bob reportedly stepped in during one of those incidents to protect his sister. He knew what his father was capable of. That knowledge produced silence, not action. Josh Duggar's harmful behavior toward multiple minors, including four of his sisters, was handled internally starting in 2002. A state trooper gave Josh a talking-to and filed nothing — that trooper later received a 56-year sentence on his own charges. Amy found disturbing material on Josh's old laptop and told Jim Bob. According to Amy, he dismissed it. Federal investigators later came asking about that same computer. In March 2026, Joseph Duggar was arrested for allegedly harming a nine-year-old during a 2020 Florida vacation. He allegedly admitted it to the victim's father and to detectives. He faces life felony charges. His wife Kendra faces child endangerment and false imprisonment charges. Three generations. Same family. Same silence. Amy named the pattern on the record months before Joseph's arrest. A family member called her "troublesome" for writing the book. Two months later, Joseph was in handcuffs.
