Beautiful OTIS Birdcaged Traction Elevator - The Maydestone Apartments - Sacramento, CA

[Recorded 8-7-21] My friend seen in this video used to live here, and bro got out of bed to let me in to film this elevator. Thanks, man! This is a really cool building! You could tell that the people involved in the renovation of this building fully understood the meaning of preserving history. The building itself is very nicely taken care of and they clean and maintain it very well. There are old photos and vintage items laying around all over the building. The thing I found the coolest was what they did to the elevator! This was originally an old OTIS but it has been modernized at least a couple times in its lifetime. The most recent mod was done by Capitol, and they did a very tasteful job! The cab is still fully birdcage, the only difference is the added netting. The hoistway also has windows in it which technically makes this a glass elevator. The COOLEST thing is what lies in the basement! All of the original hoistway doors have been preserved. They were all lined up and welded together along a wall. Around the corner, the original winding drum and all of the other machine components (controller, governor, etc.) have been put in a display cage, which is also made of some of the original elevator gates! I find it so cool that they preserved all of that instead of completely removing it. This has been converted into an overhead MRL traction, but it's neat to see that it was once a basement-driven winding drum.
