Dozens of children from Intan Jaya Regency, Papua, celebrated Christmas away from their families for the first time, hundreds of kilometers from their homeland. Early last December, they arrived in Jayapura to begin a new chapter in their lives at the Rahiman Putri Orphanage. Under the guidance of nuns, the children were expected to pursue formal education and learn good values, far from the armed conflict in their village. "I'm happy to be here with my other older siblings," said Yulistina Belau, one of the children from Intan Jaya. "There's war in the village. Mom and Dad have..." she sobbed, unable to continue her sentence. At the orphanage, they were cared for by Sister Alexia. For the next few years, she would be the mother, father, and teacher of the Intan Jaya children. "They should be in a comfortable place, with parents so they can become successful children in the future. But I see them as if they've been separated from their parents," said Alexia. At this year's Christmas celebration, Sister Alexia emphasized the value of sharing to every child at the orphanage. She said this moment should be used as an opportunity to practice the value of love. "Christmas doesn't mean new clothes or cakes.
