The Farmall M: The Most Important Tractor Ever Built — And The One Every Farmer Remembers

In 1920, twenty-five million horses worked American farms. A quarter of everything the nation grew — 93 million acres — fed nothing but the animals that helped grow the rest. Tractors existed. They could plow. But they couldn't do the one thing that would let the farmer sell the horses. One engineer from Iowa spent 47 years fixing that. Bert Benjamin walked 10,000 miles behind horses before he turned twenty. He knew exactly what the horse did on a farm — every task, every row, every season. When he built the first Farmall, management wasn't sure. Farmers thought it looked funny. IH released it in one state so failure wouldn't embarrass them nationally. Then demand exploded so fast they had to buy a second factory. 270,000 units of a single model. The horse population collapsed from 25 million to 2.5 million. And 93 million acres of animal feed were freed for human food. This is the full story of the machine that ended 10,000 years of animal-powered agriculture — the boy who saw the problem at twelve, the designer who made it beautiful, the world war that delayed it, and the company that built five million of them before destroying itself.
