Paul discusses his time onboard Battleship New Jersey, as well as his long career in writing that began in journalism and sports writing for the St. Louis Cardinals and the path leading to his work on battleships and naval biography. He also discusses updating his book on Battleship New Jersey. Paul Stillwell is a renowned naval and oral historian. He worked for thirty years at the U.S. Naval Institute as director of its oral history program and editor-in-chief of Naval History magazine. He is the author or editor of thirteen books, including famous books on battleships Arizona, Missouri, and New Jersey, and an award-winning volume on the US Navy's first African-American naval officers, The Golden Thirteen. His authoritative battleship histories are considered models of historical research and writing. Retired as an officer from the US Naval Reserve, Paul served in New Jersey during her third period of commissioning for the Vietnam War.
