XP-55 Ascender: The Most Unstable Fighter Ever Built

The Curtiss-Wright XP-55 Ascender was a radical attempt to rethink fighter design during WWII. Built around a canard configuration and a rear-mounted pusher propeller, the aircraft promised high speeds and exceptional maneuverability. However, inherent aerodynamic instability and severe control issues plagued the development process. Despite multiple modifications across three prototypes, the Ascender ultimately failed to compete with conventional fighters, and its program ended following a tragic crash at a 1945 airshow. #aviationhistory #ww2aircraft #experimentalaircraft
