Peñíscola is one of the main tourist centers in the province of Castellón. Its castle, overlooking the sea from atop a large mound, offers an easy journey back to the knightly past and fortresses of these Maestrazgo lands. Pope Benedict XIII, Peter of the Moon, chose this spot to cloister himself and fight for the unity of the Catholic Church. The fortress occupies the highest point on the peninsula. Its parade ground is a delightful balcony overlooking the Mediterranean, and the keep is an incomparable platform for contemplating the coastline. In spring and summer, this fortified enclosure hosts a film festival dedicated to the Spanish comedy genre as well as a festival of early and baroque music. But this jewel of the peninsula's heritage, where the old village is located, is only a part of the current municipality, which extends well beyond its ramparts. Its numerous hotels, apartments, and housing developments today bear witness to the touristic importance of this now fashionable beach.
