In 2003 Burnie-raised musician Matt Warren went to Germany and made a documentary about Krautrock. In the days before roaming mobile phones, Matt hit the internet café’s daily, lining up interviews during a German heatwave. From Matt: “In 2003, I was fortunate to travel to Europe and undertake an 8 week long research trip. It took in England, Czech Republic, but ostensibly Germany where I researched both German Expressionist cinema and what is known as 'Krautrock', both cultural elements that had informed my own practice and continue to do so. This documentary is a result of a fan's journey through the country that spawned the music, speaking to some of the protagonists, collaborators and fellow fans there and in the UK and Czech Republic. Featuring interviews with Alan Freeman, Mark Spybey, Harris Johns, Damo Suzuki, Jaki Liebezeit, Dominik Von Senger, Olve Strelow & Renate Knaup, with music from Amon Düül II, Faust, GAM, Phantomband, Dead Voices On Air, Damo Suzuki Network and more. In 2026, I would like to dedicate this documentary to the memory of Jaki Liebezeit (1938 - 2017), who was very generous with his time and his humour and over the years produced some incredible stoic rhythms.
