Caulking Stucco Structural cracks. Fixing Large Cracks in Stucco. Howdy all, obviously, this crack isn’t typical; it’s structural. That being said. This crack repair could have been caulked much faster, but it would not have been better. All I would have had to do was use a trowel and pull upwards. That would have been faster, but only given the illusions, the crack was filled correctly. Truth be told, only the first 1/8 to 1/4 would have been filled, and a month later, I would have had to return to recaulk it, as the suction and movement would have pulled the caulking inwards, leaving a similar vertical crack. What happens if this occurs? Nothing, you add more caulking. However, this project was close to an hour from my home, and I didn’t want to have to return to recaulk it. By using a trowel or putty knife vertically, the caulking continues to go far below the surface and instead sits on the paper one inch below the surface of the crack. Thus preventing the rain from deteriorating the paper membrane. There are many other methods for getting the caulking to the bottom; however, this knuckdown dash texture prevented me from simply squeezing a tube on my hawk and using my trowel vertically to push the caulking into this structural crack.
