Cultural Knowledge: 🇵🇭 Bbakasin Festival: The Flavors of Vinzons, Camarines Norte Now on its 5th year, the Bbakasin Festival is more than just a celebration—it's a delicious acronym that unlocks the culinary soul of Vinzons! 🎉 Bbakasin stands for: BALAW – A unique, fermented shrimp paste (made from krill) that Bicolanos swear by. It has a strong, pungent smell but an incredibly addictive, savory flavor. The best part? It can last for a decade or more without spoiling! BARIKOLKOL – The local nipa palm wine. Distilled from the sap of nipa palms that grow along the coast, this traditional liquor is a proud product of Vinzons. KAKANIN – A variety of traditional Filipino rice cakes and sweet delicacies. In Vinzons, popular treats include Angko (a mochi-like snack) and Hinalo (a brown rice cake with coconut and peanuts). SINANTOL – A classic Bicolano dish made from grated santol (cotton fruit) simmered in creamy coconut milk with shrimp paste and chili. It's the perfect balance of sour, salty, spicy, and creamy! This festival is a relatively new tradition, with its history formally documented in a webinar back in May 2022.
