The Stave Church at Urnes - The Wood of the Yggdrasil Tree, Norway | Treasures of the World
The oldest wooden church in Norway, Urnes Stave Church, is located on a headland deep in the Lusterfjord. It was built over 850 years ago on a special site. It is believed that a pagan sanctuary once stood there. ------- #documentary #unesco #treasuresoftheworld #heritageofmankind #norway #stavechurch #urnes #church ------- Watch all documentaries of the series in our playlist: https://bit.ly/treasures_of_the_world Subscribe to wocomoTRAVEL: https://goo.gl/tIk2Qc Follow us on Facebook: / wocomo ------- The church is not exactly typical - no dragon heads, no enigmatic pre-Christian masks. Its arches and capitals are more reminiscent of a Romanesque basilica made of stone. The models can be found in Rome, Ravenna and Avignon, not in Scandinavia. What makes the small church unique is a portal and some wall planks. They come from the previous church, which was just 100 years old when it was demolished for an unknown reason. Their carvings are unique. Today, the name "Urnes style" refers to all works from the Middle Ages in which this type of intertwined animal and plant life can be found. However, never in such perfection as on the north portal of Urnes Stave Church. UNESCO has been protecting the world's most valuable natural and cultural monuments as the "Heritage of Humanity" since 1972. The television series “Treasures of the World” tells of these places in impressive images. © Licensed by Telepool ------- A channel for travelers, tourists and backpackers and all those who want to inform themselves about foreign countries and cultures.
