In this video, Pir Cemal Cenan explains the institution of marriage and the rituals accompanying it in Alevism from an insider's perspective. At the heart of the narrative is the concept of "musahiplik," a fundamental institutional element of Alevi belief and social order. Pir Cenan reveals that marriage is not merely a union between two individuals, but an institution built on collective responsibilities and moral obligations within a community structure centered around the "Ocak" (hearth). Pir Cemal Cenan details how musahiplik is established, who can be chosen as a musahip, and the social principles upon which this relationship is built. He emphasizes that, particularly in the past, the establishment of musahiplik bonds between families with differing economic backgrounds served as a mechanism to strengthen solidarity, alleviate poverty, and reinforce social equality within the Alevi community. In this respect, musahiplik is considered not only a religious institution but also a powerful social one. The video describes the rituals of the Alevi marriage ceremony step-by-step, through a comparative analysis spanning from the past to the present. The transformation between traditional practices in rural Dersim villages and marriage practices currently implemented in Turkey and the European diaspora under changing conditions is concretized through the personal experiences and observations of Pir Cemal Cenan. Thus, it is shown that rituals do not remain static, but adapt to new contexts while preserving their fundamental principles. One of the most striking parts of the narrative is the recitation of verses and prayers during marriage rituals. Pir Cemal Cenan provides examples from these oral ritual texts, making visible the linguistic, symbolic, and esoteric dimensions of the Alevi understanding of marriage. These examples offer extremely valuable ethnographic information, demonstrating how Alevi oral culture plays a central role in marriage and wedding practices and how religious knowledge is transmitted.
