Video Summary Today, I'll be explaining how to sprout taro. Growing taro by sprouting significantly improves early growth and promotes smooth plant growth. The benefits of rapid sprouts are immeasurable. As a result, the potatoes will grow better and the final yield will be higher. The video covers everything from checking the storage conditions of potatoes stored in the stalk to selecting potatoes that could be used as seed potatoes and preparing them for sprouts. I'll also explain the benefits of using parent potatoes for seed potatoes. This channel shares the fun and know-how of vegetable growing. Enjoy vegetable growing to the fullest with me, a vegetable grower with over 20 years of experience. Seed Potato Storage Conditions Last year, I harvested taro on November 18th. When harvesting, I brought the potatoes I wanted to eat right away to the kitchen, and left the rest of the potatoes in the stalk. I stored them in the husk and divided them into those that needed to be disassembled. In the past, I would disassemble the larger potatoes during the harvest and put them in a Styrofoam box and bring them to my bedroom. This year, consumption was low, so most of the harvested potatoes are still stored in the husk. So, I'm going to select the ones I'll use as seed potatoes from among them. First, let's take a look at the potatoes. I haven't measured the temperature changes in the husk, but for the past 10 years, I've been able to maintain a temperature low enough to prevent the potatoes from rotting. In my experience, taro plants sprout on their own in the spring. By mid-April, white sprouts would usually appear even in the husks in the husk. So, if I plant them around mid-April, I can plant the sprouted potatoes even if they haven't sprouted yet. So, why actively sprout them? One reason is to ensure smooth growth after planting and ultimately produce a large harvest of large potatoes. Cultivation ends when winter frosts arrive. Since there is a set end date, ensuring the longest possible growing season is crucial for ensuring early germination. The other reason is that planting potatoes that have just begun to sprout ensures a 100% germination rate. Potatoes almost always sprout without the need for germination. However, sometimes potatoes are rotten and used as seed potatoes without realizing it. I'm very careful when selecting seed potatoes, but because they're covered in hair, rot can easily be overlooked. Preparing for germination. Now, I'm going to start planting these parent potatoes. We will select seed potatoes from the potatoes and prepare them for planting in early April. The germination period is about a month, so we hope the buds will start to move. Now, here are some checkpoints and preparation methods for seed potatoes: 1. Check the potatoes for rot. 2. Check the buds for abnormalities. 3. Pluck the hairs to expose the buds. 4. Remove any unnecessary buds. Cutting out the center at this time will allow for many side shoots to grow, resulting in a larger plant. 5. Place in a container, cover with soil or potting soil, and maintain moderate humidity. Reasons for using parent potatoes (narrated while preparing seed potatoes): Generally, larger baby or grandchild potatoes are used for seed potatoes. In my experience, larger potatoes used as seed potatoes sprout faster and have better initial growth. From the middle of the cultivation period, other conditions such as fertilization and irrigation come into play, but good early growth will continue to have an impact on the final stages of cultivation. So, in pursuit of larger potatoes, I decided to use parent potatoes instead of baby potatoes as seed potatoes. There are a few things to keep in mind when using parent potatoes as seed potatoes: 1) They tend to be buried too shallow. 2) Multiple shoots will emerge after germination. Short burial depth is necessary because the potatoes are large. If they are planted too shallow, even with mulch cultivation, small potatoes will emerge above the mulch towards the end of the cultivation period, resulting in inedible potatoes. The solution is to till the soil deeply or plant the potatoes lying flat. If the number of shoots after germination is not limited to about three, many parent potatoes will emerge, ultimately resulting in inedible potatoes. If you do, the seed potatoes will start to simmer and become uncontrollable. Limit the number of seed potatoes to the main parent potato candidate and about two others, and tuck the other sprouts into the soil. Last year, the seeds started sprouting in late March and were planted on April 15th. The sprouting period was about three weeks, and by mid-May, all the seed potatoes had sprouted. This year, I'd like to start growing about 10 days earlier than last year. This is to see how early I can start the plants and still get them to sprout. Summary (Talk with the camera fixed on the seed potato candidate) Now, let me summarize the contents of this video. I'...
