It was won for the first and only time by German time trialist Jan Ullrich, his second career podium finish at the Grande Boucle after finishing second the previous year. He finished the transalpine stage race in 100:30:35. In second place in the general classification, 9:09 behind the winner, was French climber Richard Virenque (his second and final career podium finish at the Champs-Élysées, after finishing third the previous year). Another climber, Italian Marco Pantani (on his second podium at the Tour after another third-place finish in the 1994 edition), finished third in the overall standings, 14:03 behind the winner.
