Formula 1 1977 Belgian GP | Gunnar Nilsson's Only Victory | Race Highlights

The 1977 Belgian Grand Prix would later be remembered as one of the most emotional chapters in Formula 1 history. Gunnar Nilsson, a well-liked and respected figure in the paddock, took his only career victory that afternoon at Zolder. The triumph carried even greater weight with hindsight, as Nilsson’s life was tragically cut short by cancer just over a year later. His win became not only a sporting achievement, but also a bittersweet reminder of the immense promise left unfulfilled. The start at Zolder was delayed nearly an hour as officials declared the race wet. Teams scrambled over tyre choices, with John Watson’s Brabham crew switching to wets while James Hunt bravely stuck to slicks—the only man to do so. As the race finally got underway, Watson shot past pole-sitter Mario Andretti, while chaos unfolded behind. Andretti soon misjudged his braking into the Kleine Chicane, crashing into Watson and eliminating both. Nilsson narrowly avoided the mess and emerged near the front, only to be passed by Jody Scheckter’s Wolf at the end of lap one. In the early laps, Scheckter pulled a small lead while Nilsson and Jochen Mass fought hard in pursuit. Hunt’s slick gamble quickly turned disastrous, as he slipped down the order and was even lapped by the leaders. Retirements mounted as Emerson Fittipaldi, Hans Stuck, Riccardo Patrese, and Carlos Reutemann all fell by the wayside. Changing track conditions added more drama, with drivers switching to slicks as the circuit dried. Niki Lauda’s Ferrari rose into contention after a quick stop, aided when Scheckter spun off while leading. Nilsson’s race nearly collapsed with a problematic wheel change, dropping him down the order, but he clawed his way back. As the pit cycle unfolded, Lauda took control at the front, pursued by Mass, Peterson, and a resurgent Nilsson. By mid-distance, Nilsson charged through the field with determined pace. Mass crashed out, and Nilsson closed rapidly on Lauda. On lap 50, he seized the lead with a bold move at the Kleine Chicane. From there, he pulled away to secure an unforgettable maiden win. Lauda finished second, while Ronnie Peterson claimed third ahead of Vittorio Brambilla, Alan Jones, and Hans Stuck. Hunt, whose gamble had failed, ended just outside the points. Nilsson’s victory at Zolder would be his only triumph in Formula 1, yet it remains one of the sport’s most poignant moments, remembered as much for his courageous drive as for the tragic brevity of his career. 📌 If you’re passionate about untold racing stories, forgotten heroes, and iconic Grand Prix moments that shaped the sport, please, consider subscribing to the channel, so you don’t miss future content.
